Our daughter was born a few weeks before Christmas and required some time in the NICU. This was familiar territory, as several of our kids have spent some time in the NICU, but that doesn't make it easy. Tiffiani cared for my daughter over several days and we got to chat and I learned about her family and kids.
She was very kind and compassionate, as most NICU nurses are, but something that set her apart was that she made a special Christmas craft with her feet and handprints, using her own supplies and laminated it. When I came into the room, I started crying because I love to make a special ornament for each of my kids with their footprints or handprints, no matter when they were born, but someone was thoughtful enough to do this for me.
Later, I thanked her and started crying again, and told her I was exhausted and stressed. We didn't yet have a name for our daughter, and I was going back and forth between the hospital and home to spend time with all our kids. She gave me a big hug and acknowledged how hard it was and told me it would be okay. It was not just about the care she showed for my daughter, but just as much about the care she showed me, the mom, at a really vulnerable time.
