On Friday, an electrical fire broke out in a room that was occupied by a nonverbal hospice patient. At the time, the patient’s elderly husband was at the bedside. The incident began when smoke was seen rising from behind the patient’s bed, prompting the family member to urgently call for help.

The response from the 4 West team was immediate and nothing short of extraordinary. The team acted quickly, calmly, and with incredible coordination:

One team member promptly retrieved a fire extinguisher and began putting out the fire.

Another team member safely escorted the patient's husband out of the room.

A third staff member went through the unit, ensuring all doors were closed to contain the smoke and prevent further risk.

Meanwhile, two other team members worked together to evacuate the patient safely, moving the entire bed to avoid disrupting the patient’s condition.

The unit clerk also played a critical role by alerting the hospital operator, ensuring that the fire alarm was activated and emergency protocols were initiated without delay.

Thanks to the swift, systematic, and team-oriented actions of the 4 West staff, a potentially catastrophic situation was brought under control quickly and efficiently. Their teamwork not only minimized the damage from the fire but, more importantly, saved the life of a vulnerable patient.

The patient was safely transferred to another unit for continued care and monitoring.

The composure, quick thinking, and collaboration demonstrated by the entire 4 West team are truly commendable. Their actions exemplify the very spirit of nursing excellence and compassionate care that the DAISY Award represents.

This team wholeheartedly deserves recognition for their heroic efforts.
