Crystal was the day-shift nurse caring for my mother, and she demonstrated kindness and compassion in every interaction. She reminded me of the many exceptional nurses who have cared for my parents over the years whenever they became ill. This hospital stay was especially stressful, as my 81‑year‑old mother had to undergo two difficult procedures.

Throughout it all, this nurse remained consistently kind, compassionate, and attentive. My mother had several bowel movements, and the nurse humbly and gently tended to her needs. Rather than delegating the task entirely to the CNA, she assisted with the cleanup herself. On one occasion, she fed my mother until my mom insisted on feeding herself. When she noticed that my mother was struggling to chew, she thoughtfully cut her green beans into smaller, more manageable pieces.

She also empowered me to advocate for my mother’s care by offering helpful suggestions on what to discuss with the physician. She applied her expertise and experience not only to provide exceptional, compassionate care to my mother but also to support our family during a very challenging and emotional time.

She is a true example of kindness, compassion, and dedicated service—qualities that embody the spirit of the DAISY Award. Every interaction felt like receiving a beautiful bouquet of the flower for which the award is named.
