Instead of making me feel guilty or ashamed about my condition or the situation that led to this visit, she communicated the seriousness of my health with empathy and hope.
During my recent visit to the Emergency Department, I received care from LPN Toya. Her compassion, professionalism, and genuine human kindness made this experience stand out above every other hospital visit I’ve had. I am a Type 1 Diabetic, and I have had emergency care in multiple cities — Boston, Charlotte, and Dallas, among others.
I am sadly familiar with the hospital process. However, the level of care I received from Toya was unlike anything I had ever experienced before. Her energy truly shifted the room. Her spirit was warm, light, encouraging, and sincere. She carried compassion in her voice and presence. Instead of making me feel guilty or ashamed about my condition or the situation that led to this visit, she communicated the seriousness of my health with empathy and hope.
She reminded me that it was not about what I did wrong — it was about how we could move forward and get me healthy. That approach matters. It changes how a person receives care. It changes whether they feel worthy of care. Toya created an environment of safety, dignity, understanding, and healing. Not once did I feel like “just another patient.” I felt like a person — a person whose health, future, and well-being truly mattered to them.
I walked in scared and physically unwell. I walked out supported, stabilized, and hopeful. For that, I am sincerely grateful. She deserves to be recognized not only for her clinical skill but also for the heart she brings into the room. I genuinely believe she embodies what compassionate, patient-centered care is supposed to look like .
