She approaches each situation with calm confidence, professionalism, and empathy, regardless of how complex or demanding it may be.
From the moment of admission, Cristina demonstrates remarkable clinical insight. She goes beyond the standard assessment questions to identify subtle but critical needs that support our patients' rehabilitation and overall well-being. During one admission, I observed her approach a particularly long and challenging intake with incredible patience and empathy. The new veteran was understandably anxious and talkative, yet Cristina's calm demeanor and genuine interest in his story helped build trust and set the tone for a positive therapeutic relationship.

Because many of our patients remain with us for weeks or even months, relationships and trust are integral to their recovery. Cristina's impact is evident in the way her patients seek her out. One patient in particular, who can be a bit critical of staff, routinely spends time at the nurses' station whenever Cristina is working. Even if she isn't at the nurses' station, I know where Cristina is based on the patient's location. That alone speaks volumes about the comfort and sense of connection she provides.

Her advocacy extends far beyond the bedside. She takes time to understand her patients' family dynamics, psychosocial challenges, and long-term goals. For that same teenage patient, she collaborated closely with physicians and social workers to ensure his discharge plan prioritized both safety and continued progress after realizing the plan wasn't aligning with the dynamics she was seeing. Her voice for the patient was clear, informed, and compassionate, a true reflection of holistic nursing care. Her advocacy led to further discussions on his discharge planning to better prepare him for success outside of our facility.

Cristina has an extraordinary ability to tailor her communication and care style to meet each patient's individual needs. One moment that truly stood out was her interaction with a teenage patient struggling with bowel continence for months. Through humor, encouragement, and reassurance, Cristina helped this patient achieve his first continent bowel movement in months. This was an accomplishment that profoundly affected his confidence and recovery. Few people can make a teenager laugh during such a vulnerable moment, but Cristina did so naturally and with grace. Even during the more delicate moments of care, such as when we've had to change this teenager in bed, she lightens the mood by singing to make the experience more comfortable and casual for him, a simple but powerful gesture that preserves dignity and builds trust.

Cristina is also not afraid of the tough patients or their families. She approaches each situation with calm confidence, professionalism, and empathy, regardless of how complex or demanding it may be. I've personally had family members of high-ranking officials come to me to express how much they appreciate Cristina's expertise and care, sharing that they feel at ease and safe leaving their loved one when they know she's on duty. That level of trust and reassurance speaks volumes about her consistency and the respect she earns from everyone she encounters.
