Sasha was assigned a patient to get ready for surgery. When she went to see the patient, he stated that he showered as best as he could the night before his procedure. He lives alone and has no one to help care for him. The patient was allergic to sage wipes, so Sasha was not able to follow protocol to wipe the patient from neck to toes.

Sasha was concerned about post-surgical surgical site infection, so she asked where she could shower the patient. Sasha brought him to the shower while providing privacy, dignity, and humanity. When the patient arrived back in his room, he thanked Sasha for helping prepare him for surgery. Sasha asked the patient if she could wash his clothes while he was in surgery. When the patient was in the recovery area, she brought him his freshly washed and folded clothes.

The patient became teary-eyed at the compassion Sasha showed him. The patient thanked Sasha for her kindness. She demonstrated kindness, compassion, dignity, and humanity with all her care for this patient. In the fast-paced perioperative area, Sasha took the time to care for the patient's physical, mental, and emotional needs. Florence Nightingale would be proud of Sasha.
