I didn't have anyone with me, and she really made me feel safe.
I am actually not positive of her name; she was young, and I think it was Grace. She was the triage nurse. I came in for a break in my arm following a sexual assault. Immediately, she began triaging me with the utmost care. She assured me that what I went through was not my fault and that I did the right thing coming in.
I was extremely nervous and distraught, and she immediately made me feel safe. She reassured me so many times that I was not to blame, and that she cared about me and my well-being. She was so quick to put me in a room, checked on me multiple times despite being the triage nurse, held my hand when I took ibuprofen and water, and even came back to check on me before she left her shift hours later to make sure that I was doing okay.
I didn't have anyone with me, and she really made me feel safe. It is hard to put into words what you feel coming in for this type of situation. She somehow knew how to make me feel normal. I could tell her empathy was genuine and deep. I am a nursing student today, and I honestly think about her often in clinicals. I hope to be a nurse who makes their patients feel the same way one day. She provided beyond exemplary care, and she deserves so much recognition for her character.
