Mary
Krikorian
I’m nominating Mary Krikorian for the DAISY Award because I watched her turn a stressful moment into a safe, human experience. During a particularly busy shift, a patient who’d been “stable” on paper grew unusually quiet and pale. Mary didn’t brush it off; she sat at eye level, repeated a focused assessment, and noticed subtle changes: rising heart rate, cooler skin, and new, shallow breathing.
She immediately spoke up to the RN and provider, advocated for a prompt reassessment, and helped initiate timely interventions while keeping the room calm. Just as importantly, Mary explained each step to the patient in simple, reassuring language and updated the family with consent so no one felt left in the dark. The patient stabilized, and the family later said they felt “safe because of her.” Afterward, Mary wrote a thoughtful reflection and shared quick tips with classmates on recognizing early deterioration and communicating clearly under pressure.
Her blend of clinical vigilance, advocacy, and genuine compassion made a meaningful difference that day. Mary embodies what this award stands for.

During our clinical rotation at Henry Mayo, Mary Krikorian demonstrated exceptional compassion and leadership while caring for a patient recovering from a complicated C-section. The patient was in significant pain and expressed fear about moving or caring for her newborn. Mary took the time to sit with her, listen to her concerns, and calmly explain each step of her care plan.
She helped the patient ambulate for the first time post-surgery, offering steady support and constant encouragement. By the end of the shift, the patient was able to hold and feed her baby with confidence, thanking Mary for helping her regain both physical and emotional strength. Mary’s kindness, patience, and genuine dedication to her patients’ well-being embody the values of the DAISY Award and reflect the highest standards of nursing at West Coast University.

During our clinical rotation, Mary made a meaningful difference through her compassion and patience with a patient who had dementia. The patient appeared frightened and refused care, and became upset whenever anyone approached. Instead of walking away and relying on the nurses to handle the situation, Mary took the time to gently talk to the patient, reassuring her with a calm and kind voice.
She sat by her side, held her hand, and listened as she shared stories from her past, which helped the patient feel more at ease and willing to receive care. Her ability to connect with the patient showed her deep empathy and respect for her dignity. It was very heartwarming to see how she navigated such a difficult situation with patience and empathy.
Mary’s actions not only comforted the patient, but also inspired other students and me around her to approach care with the same level of kindness and understanding.

I want to nominate Mary Krikorian for the DAISY Award because she is genuinely one of the most caring and supportive nursing students I’ve met. There was a day when one of our patients was extremely anxious and visibly scared about a procedure. A lot was happening, and everyone was busy, but Mary noticed right away and went to sit with them. She didn’t do anything dramatic; she just talked to them, held their hand, and explained things in a way they could understand. You could literally see their whole mood change because she made them feel safe.
Mary does this kind of thing all the time, not just with patients but with classmates, too. She checks in on people, shares advice, helps without making anyone feel dumb, and just has a really comforting presence. She reminds us that being a nurse isn’t just about skills but about kindness. That’s why I think she deserves this.
