At his next visit, Karen handed him a handwritten “prescription” for 10 minutes of daily gardening and a packet of zinnia seeds. This small gesture had a profound impact.
During a recent mid-year check-in, Karen Price shared a profoundly moving story that exemplifies her exceptional skill, compassion, and dedication to holistic nursing care. As a Radiopharmaceutical Nurse in Radiation Oncology, Karen consistently goes beyond clinical responsibilities to create meaningful, healing connections with her patients, connections that uplift spirits, foster trust, and leave lasting impressions on both patients and their families.
Karen was caring for a patient with metastatic prostate cancer who had recently relocated to Charlotte and was receiving Pluvicto as a last-line therapy. It was clear to Karen that the patient was emotionally withdrawn and overwhelmed by his diagnosis. Despite offering referrals to dietary and occupational therapy, which he politely declined, Karen recognized that what he needed most in that moment wasn’t another clinical intervention; it was a human connection.
Drawing on insights from a recent Radiation Oncology journal club, an initiative she actively leads, Karen gently asked, “What would bring you joy right now?” That simple, powerful question opened the door to a heartfelt conversation. The patient shared his love for cooking and gardening, activities that once brought him peace and purpose.
Karen responded by sharing her own joy in planting lenten roses and encouraged him to reconnect with his passion for gardening. At his next visit, Karen handed him a handwritten “prescription” for 10 minutes of daily gardening and a packet of zinnia seeds. This small gesture had a profound impact. The patient left the clinic feeling emotionally uplifted, seen, and heard. His wife, who joined him in the lobby, was equally moved and encouraged by the interaction. It was a moment of genuine healing that extended beyond medicine.
When the patient’s disease later progressed, and treatment had to be discontinued, his greatest sorrow was not being able to bring in the flowers he had grown from Karen’s seeds. Karen reflected, “In that moment, I knew I changed his life forever, and he changed mine.”
Karen’s story is a powerful testament to the kind of nurse she is, one who listens deeply, acts with intention, and brings humanity into every patient interaction. Her ability to identify and respond to the emotional and spiritual needs of her patients is a hallmark of holistic care. She creates a safe space where patients feel valued, respected, and empowered, even in the most vulnerable moments of their lives.
Beyond her clinical excellence, Karen is a pillar of support for her team. She leads the Radiation Oncology journal club with passion and purpose, fostering a culture of continuous learning, reflection, and evidence-based practice. Through this forum, she encourages her colleagues to explore innovative approaches to care, share experiences, and engage in meaningful dialogue that enhances both professional growth and patient outcomes. Her leadership promotes nurse engagement and strengthens the team’s ability to deliver compassionate, personalized care.
Karen Price embodies the essence of skillful, compassionate, and patient-centered nursing. Her actions not only enhance the patient and family experience but also elevate the culture of nursing within our department. She is a role model, a mentor, and a quiet force of healing whose impact resonates far beyond the walls of the clinic.
