I am submitting this nomination as both a patient and a fellow nurse who previously worked in the cancer center alongside the nurse I am nominating. Although she is new to the cancer center, the level of care she provided during a medical emergency reflected the skill, confidence, and professionalism of a seasoned oncology nurse.
During my infusion, I developed an acute reaction with throat tightening, shortness of breath, and difficulty swallowing. Her response was immediate and decisive. The infusion was stopped promptly, emergency interventions were initiated without hesitation, and the infusion provider was notified quickly. As a nurse myself, I recognized how critical those early moments were, and her actions were timely, appropriate, and exceptionally well-coordinated.
What stood out most was her calm presence. Even in a high-stress situation, she remained focused and reassuring, clearly communicating each step while closely monitoring my condition. She anticipated needs, collaborated seamlessly with the team, and ensured that every intervention was carried out safely. Despite being newer to the cancer center environment, she demonstrated remarkable clinical judgment and situational awareness.
After the immediate reaction resolved, her advocacy continued. She recognized the effects of emergency medications on my blood glucose as a Type 1 diabetic, ensured additional monitoring was ordered, and remained attentive until I was stable and safe for discharge. At no point did I feel rushed or overlooked.
Having previously worked in the cancer center, I understand the complexity and pace of infusion care. I also know how challenging it can be for newer staff to manage emergencies with confidence. She handled this situation with a level of composure and compassion that speaks volumes about her dedication to patient safety and excellence in nursing practice.
This experience reinforced my respect for her as a nurse and as a colleague. She exemplifies the values of oncology nursing, clinical excellence, teamwork, advocacy, and compassion and is truly deserving of this recognition through the DAISY Award.
