Despite the danger of the unstable vehicle and the traumatic scene, Jenn remained composed and focused solely on the lives in front of her.
I would like to recognize Jenn Miller because she embodies what it means to be a nurse both inside and outside the hospital walls. Her actions recently went far beyond the call of duty and exemplify the highest standards of nursing care, compassion, and selflessness.
On her way to work today, Jenn came upon a severe car accident that had just occurred. Without hesitation, and without concern for her own safety, she stopped and immediately sprang into action. One of the vehicles involved was lying on its side. One passenger had managed to escape, but two others remained trapped inside.
With years of emergency room experience, Jenn instantly went into nursing mode. After checking on the status of the one passenger who was able to self-removal, she called family members to bring tools in order to cut through a fence that was blocking access to the vehicle. Once she gained access, she assessed the situation with urgency and skill. Recognizing that the driver was in critical condition, Jenn climbed into the unstable, overturned vehicle (without gloves, surrounded by shattered glass and blood) and began protecting the driver's cervical spine, physically holding him up to prevent further injury.
Despite the danger of the unstable vehicle and the traumatic scene, Jenn remained composed and focused solely on the lives in front of her. She made sure the second trapped passenger was able to safely exit the vehicle, then remained inside, supporting the critically injured driver with her own body until EMS arrived. Her swift, decisive actions were vital in stabilizing the patient, who was later transported via life flight to a trauma center.
Even after EMS took over care of the driver, Jenn took time to check on the other two individuals involved in the wreck, ensuring they were okay. They later recognized her and expressed deep gratitude for what she had done for all of them.
Jenn’s response to this accident is a testament to the heart of nursing: putting the patient first, no matter the circumstance. Her courage, clinical skill, and compassion saved a life today. She is the embodiment of what the DAISY Award celebrates: extraordinary nurses who go above and beyond, making a profound difference in the lives of others.
