At the end of our time together, Shelby even wrote heartfelt letters to both my mother and mesomething I will treasure forever.
In December of 2025, my father, who is 5,4 was brought to Baylor St. Luke's after suffering a hemorrhagic stroke. Shelby cared for him and for my family for three of the hardest days of our lives. From the moment she stepped into the room, it was clear that her care extended far beyond clinical duties.
Shelby provided exceptional, compassionate care to my father while also supporting my mother, my brother, and me during an unimaginably painful time. She helped guide us through the devastating reality of my father's prognosis and gently supported us as we navigated the difficult decision to withdraw treatment after learning the extent of his brain injury. She was present with us when the physician explained our options, ensuring we felt informed, supported, and never alone.
During those days, Shelby took the time to truly know our family. She listened patiently to my mother's stories about my father, honored who he was as a person, and treated him with dignity and respect at every moment. After learning that I am in nursing school, she took time to teach me tips and tricks, encouraging me in my own journey.
At the end of our time together, Shelby even wrote heartfelt letters to both my mother and mesomething I will treasure forever. Shelby did not just care for my dad; she cared for our entire family. Her genuine kindness, empathy, and presence exemplify what nursing is meant to be. Although she is younger than I am, she is the kind of nurse I hope to become. I will never forget the compassion she showed us during the worst days of our lives.
