Mikayla made sure this patient didn’t just feel like a number in the system, but as someone worthy of attention, love, and dignity.
I am honored to nominate nurse Mikayla, our new grad nurse on the unit, for the DAISY Award, recognizing the extraordinary compassion and kindness she shows each day as a nurse. Mikayla’s actions have touched the heart of a family in ways that words can hardly capture, and her dedication went far beyond the call of duty in caring for a patient facing overwhelming challenges.

While providing care to this patient, Mikayla observed that the family was struggling, and it became clear they were without enough food at home. Seeing their distress, Mikayla didn’t just see a patient; she saw a family in need, and she took immediate, compassionate action. Mikayla made sure the social worker was alerted to their situation so the family could receive proper assistance. She didn’t stop there, though.

Mikayla went above and beyond to ensure they had something to eat right then, personally providing food at the bedside, so they didn’t leave hungry. Her compassion was tangible, and it was clear that Mikayla truly cared for this family’s well-being, not just as patients, but as people. Mikayla saw the entire family as her patients, not just the person who was assigned to the bed.

Mikayla’s kindness didn’t end with food. She noticed that the patient, already vulnerable and in pain, was also cold without any warmth or comfort from home. Without hesitation, Mikayla took it upon herself after her shift to purchase a soft blanket and cozy fuzzy socks for the patient to bring in the following day.

Her simple yet powerful act of kindness was a reminder that sometimes the greatest comfort comes from feeling seen, heard, and cared for. Mikayla made sure this patient didn’t just feel like a number in the system, but as someone worthy of attention, love, and dignity. Mikayla’s selflessness and thoughtfulness are the heart and soul of nursing. She not only provided excellent clinical care but also went above and beyond to meet the emotional, physical, and psychological needs of her patient and their family. She created a safe space for them to feel valued, cared for, and respected; something that can make all the difference in a challenging and uncertain time.

Her actions were not only impactful in the moment but also left a lasting impression on the family. They will forever remember the nurse who saw them, truly cared for them, and made them feel worthy of love and support when they needed it most. Mikayla exemplifies the very best qualities of a nurse: compassion, empathy, and an unwavering commitment to improving the lives of those she cares for. Mikayla is also a new nurse on our unit and cares for her patients that I see some nurses with years of experience unable to do. The compassion she has cannot be taught. For her incredible heart, dedication, and the profound difference she has made in the lives of others, Mikayla is more than deserving of the DAISY Award.
