I trusted Caitlyn and allowed myself to be a mom for the night and get some much-needed sleep beside my son.
I have been a bedside RN at the Cleveland Clinic for over 20 years, but this time I found myself as a visitor, as my son had surgery and required an overnight stay. I stayed overnight with him. Caitlyn was fantastic! My son looked so vulnerable in that hospital bed after his procedure, and all he wanted was to "go home" because he was "scared".
Caitlyn took the time to talk to him about his feelings, lowering herself to meet him at eye level. She brought him a cool magic trick to learn as a distraction, and this allowed him to feel like a kid and not focus on the medical equipment hooked up to him, which he also was bothered by. He was not feeling well enough to learn the magic rope trick while in the hospital, but he was so excited to show his brothers the trick once he got home and felt better, and wanted her to know that he had mastered the trick! She rounded on my son frequently and purposefully. We never had to use the call light one time while in her care. I felt safe knowing that she was present and confident, and I felt as though she cared for my son as if he were one of her family members, even "fist bumping" him a time or two, which made him smile.
As a nurse, I know that things can go bad quickly in the hospital, and I found myself looking at his monitors frequently to ensure that he was ok, but I trusted Caitlyn and allowed myself to be a mom for the night and get some much-needed sleep beside my son. Thank you for your dedication and compassion. You are very much appreciated for your outstanding care and performance.
