For a patient in the ICU, this kind of continuity and connection is invaluable. It makes my dad feel seen as a whole person, not just someone in a hospital bed.
I’d like to share why Nurse Afton has been such an extraordinary presence in my family’s life during my dad’s stay in the ICU at St Tammany Health System. My dad has been battling blood clots, AFib, and lung cancer, and these past days have been some of the most frightening and overwhelming our family has ever faced. Yet every night that Afton walks into his room, she brings a level of comfort, competence, and kindness that immediately puts all of us at ease.

From the very first moment we met her, Afton earned our trust. She communicates clearly and patiently, taking the time to explain what is happening, what the team is monitoring, and what to expect throughout the night. She never rushes through updates; instead, she checks in repeatedly with my dad and with us, making sure we feel informed and reassured. The way she speaks—with warmth, clarity, and genuine care—makes an enormous difference, especially during stressful nights when uncertainty can feel overwhelming.

Afton also remembers everything my dad shares with her, whether it’s medical details or personal stories from his life. The next night, she picks up right where they left off, which shows just how present and attentive she is. For a patient in the ICU, this kind of continuity and connection is invaluable. It makes my dad feel seen as a whole person, not just someone in a hospital bed.

Her empathy is something you can feel instantly. She greets my dad—and all of us—with the biggest, most sincere smile each time she enters the room. She is gentle, patient, and incredibly comforting to be around. Even on the toughest nights, she brings calm energy that steadies not only my dad but also my mom, who has been at his bedside around the clock. Afton includes our entire family in her care, acknowledging how difficult the journey is for all of us.

Beyond her compassion, her clinical excellence is unmistakable. She is attentive to every detail, notices even the smallest changes in my dad’s condition, and responds quickly and confidently. Her critical thinking skills show in the way she anticipates needs, coordinates with the rest of the ICU team, and explains the reasoning behind each step of his care. Knowing she is there during the night gives us peace we didn’t think was possible in the ICU.

One moment that truly touched us was when Afton shared that she had added my dad to her prayer intentions. It was such a simple gesture, but it spoke volumes about her heart. She clearly embodies the STHS mission of caring for patients and families with excellence, compassion, and teamwork. She not only meets expectations—she goes far beyond them.

It genuinely feels like Afton was made for this work. Her combination of skill, empathy, and dedication brings light into a very difficult experience for our family. We are deeply grateful for the difference she has made in my dad’s care and in our lives.
