That moment reflected not just excellent nursing, but true compassion and human connection.
I have been a patient at Meriter many times over the past six years due to complex medical conditions. During my most recent stay for a surgery and correction surgery, I received excellent care from many staff members, but no one made a greater impact on my recovery than my nurse, Amy. As a retired pediatric and school nurse with more than 40 years of experience, I understand the intense demands of this profession and what truly exceptional nursing looks like. Amy is one of those rare, extraordinary nurses. Despite my complicated medical needs, she never once made me feel like a burden. She treated me as a whole person, not a collection of diagnoses and medications or a checkbox. Even on her busiest days, she managed my pain effectively, navigated my extensive medications with ease (even with my particular preferences), communicated clearly, and always approached my care with a thoughtful, proactive plan. Her calm confidence, compassion, and meticulous attention to detail gave me a level of trust I deeply needed. Beyond her clinical excellence, Amy supported me emotionally and therapeutically. She didn’t simply rush in and out—she took the time to truly know me, to have real conversations, and to understand what mattered most in my recovery. She knew how important it was for me to heal so I could return home to care for my granddaughter, who has her own complex medical needs. Before every therapy session, Amy ensured my pain was well managed and she gave me a paper talk so I could give my best effort. Her encouragement helped me find the confidence to take my first walk down the hallway. She even made me a simple but deeply meaningful motivational sign—something I still have today. One evening towards the end of hospitalization, no one else was available to walk with me. It was towards the end of Amy’s shift, when she easily could have said she was too busy or passed it off, instead, Amy said, “I’ve got this. Give me 10 minutes to check on a few patients, and I will be back to walk with you.” And she did, exactly as promised. We walked, talked about my granddaughter, and celebrated every step. That moment reflected not just excellent nursing, but true compassion and human connection.
I recently completed my long inpatient rehab stay and am home, able to care for my granddaughter and enjoy each day with my family. I credit Amy for helping me reach this point. She is an advocate, a motivator, and a genuine source of strength—a beautiful soul who embodies the heart of nursing. After four decades in this profession, I can confidently say that Amy is the kind of nurse every patient hopes for and every nurse strives to be. She is the nurse we would trust with our most loved ones. Her compassion, empathy, clinical expertise, advocacy, and unwavering dedication truly reflect the spirit of the DAISY Award. From the bottom of my heart, thank you, Amy, for making such a meaningful difference in my life. My granddaughter, my family, and I are forever grateful. Please always remember your “why” and give yourself the same compassion you give your patients.
