My aunt being sick and in Florida was difficult, but seeing her and Stormy together made me know that she was cared for, even if family wasn't present.
I met Stormy during one of my aunt's admissions and saw her in each subsequent encounter. My dad spoke about a nurse named Stormy during my aunt's initial visit to Blessing while I was in Florida, before I returned. He told me how there was a nurse working in the cardiac ICU and taking care of my aunt, who was calmed by her presence, as she held her hand and brushed her hair. I was happy to hear that, because my aunt had placed her health on the back burner to take care of her mother, my grandmother.
But I didn't know how much the nurse, Stormy, was a comfort to my aunt until I saw it for myself in the room. Stormy walked in, hugged my aunt, sat on the edge of the bed, and held her hand to talk to her. My aunt lit up whenever she came into the room, and even as she grew sicker and weaker. Stormy was the one she perked up to see, each time.
I remember my aunt telling her, before her discharge to go home on palliative/hospice, “You are an angel, Stormy. I know God picked you for a reason to care for me.” Stormy responded that she was so grateful that God had chosen her to be there for her. They hugged, and we all shed tears at goodbye.
