They made sure his immediate medical needs were addressed first, and after that, they addressed his human needs.
We had a gentleman admitted late on a Friday night for alcohol withdrawal, extensive wounds, and failure to thrive. He came to the hospital because he was no longer able to care for himself; he wants to get sober and to get help.
He shared that he had been falling a lot at home, and when asked how he gets up, he said he doesn't; he crawls around at home for extended periods.
When he came to our unit, his brief was soiled; his wounds related to this. When questioned about this, he shared his struggles with caring for himself. He told us that he doesn't remember the last time he was able to bathe, but thinks it has been a few months.
His story broke our hearts.
Staff first made sure he was fed, as we don’t know how long it had been since he had an actual meal.
Although it was late at night, everyone made sure this patient was clean before he went to bed; he was hesitant to shower, but thanks to his nurse for making a deal with him, he agreed. Staff covered for one another that night to free up two nursing assistants to assist with the shower. The patient was so grateful for his shower and for clean sheets.
What I saw from our team the night he was admitted was an act of compassion that deserves to be recognized. The staff cared for this man with kindness and dignity. They made sure his immediate medical needs were addressed first, and after that, they addressed his human needs. Thank you for going above and beyond to make sure this patient was cared for!
