Last week, when I was working on medical, I responded to a room down the hall with a patient who had escalating behavior. Lilian was in the room with her patient, trying to de-escalate the patient. Lilian had had this patient for multiple shifts and had developed a rapport with the patient over several days. We ended up calling a security assist, but I was struck by how incredibly patient, kind, and empathetic Lilian was towards her patient, even while the patient was saying incredibly rude and hurtful things. Lilian was a strong advocate for her patient and teared up at the prospect of potentially restraining her patient. It was very clear how deeply she cared about her patients and their overall well-being. This is not the first time I have seen her go above and beyond for her patients. The medical unit is incredibly lucky to have such a patient and kind nurse like Lilian! Patients will feel seen, heard, and like their needs are advocated for, even in difficult situations. Patients will receive exemplary care when they have a nurse who is as kind and caring as Lilian.
