I went home feeling confident that he was going to be cared for. I appreciate John for giving us that.
John was the admitting nurse when my grandfather was transferred from the Southwest ED. This admission occurred at shift change, and while we knew that it was bad timing, John never made us feel like it was a bother. My grandfather has dementia and has not been hospitalized since he has progressed, so we were nervous about how we would behave during this admission.

Papa had not slept much, and we could see he was becoming irritable. John was patient and treated Papa with respect, never becoming irritated when things needed to be repeated. John was quick to put in interventions to promote skin integrity and advocated for PRNs to help encourage rest. On his second day of admission, Papa had not been out of bed or turned till John came in. He recognized this and assisted in getting him up to the chair and washed up for the day. This was as soon as he arrived, which I recognize is a busy time for staff. At one point, my grandfather said, "Young man, thank you for all you are doing to take care of me." My mom and I were stunned. Papa doesn't often give out compliments or appreciation, another thing lost to this terrible disease. As a nurse, it is hard to be on the other side of the bed. I went home feeling confident that he was going to be cared for. I appreciate John for giving us that.
