When the patient became visibly emotional, Bina immediately ensured her privacy and created a safe, supportive space for her to share what she was experiencing.
It is my distinct honor to nominate Bina Chaulagain for the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. Her remarkable clinical intuition, compassion, and unwavering commitment to patient safety recently resulted in a life-saving intervention that exemplifies the highest standards of nursing excellence.

During what began as a routine review of discharge paperwork, Bina sensed that something was deeply troubling the patient. When the patient became visibly emotional, Bina immediately ensured her privacy and created a safe, supportive space for her to share what she was experiencing.

The patient disclosed a series of devastating personal losses, a recent medical diagnosis, and an overwhelming emotional burden. Recognizing the gravity of the situation, the nurse asked the critical questions needed to assess the patient’s safety. When the patient revealed she did not feel safe going home, Bina took immediate and decisive action—coordinating with the physician to have the patient readmitted for psychiatric care and stabilization.

Two days later, the impact of the nurse’s actions became profoundly clear. Upon returning to the Discharge Lounge, the patient sought her out, embraced her, and said, “You are my angel—you saved my life.” She explained that she had intended to end her life that first day, but the nurse’s willingness to notice her pain, listen without judgment, and intervene with urgency had changed the course of her life.

The patient later shared, “She is a true angel. She saved my life yesterday. She completely understood my hurt and my loss. She took action immediately and had me back upstairs where I needed to be. I talked to the right people. Since my parents both passed three days apart and my 30-year marriage ended, she saw my pain. I wouldn’t be here today if it weren’t for her.”

This encounter is a powerful testament to our commitment to Safe Passage. As the final point of contact in the care continuum, the nurse demonstrated that the discharge process is not merely administrative—it is a critical moment for advocacy, intuition, and compassionate care. Her ability to trust her instincts and respond with extraordinary empathy reflects the core values of our Nursing Strategic Plan.

Bina is a credit to our profession, a true guardian of patient safety, and a shining example of what it means to be an extraordinary nurse. I am proud to recommend her for this prestigious honor.
