Finally, she is the poster child for “advancing healing for all.” Jana does not walk past a call light or avoid a call bell, even when it’s not her patient.
Caring, compassionate, hard-working; those are all words that I would use to describe Jana Elliott, RN.

When I think about her work as it relates to the Mission of Atrium Health, I can see plainly that she fulfills all the goals of our Mission statement: to improve health, elevate hope, and advance healing for all.

As nurses, we are so focused on improving the health of our patients, but when I think of Jana, I look at the dedication she has shown to her own health, and the positive impact that it has had on her patient care.

As a new nurse, Jana was timid and maybe a little anxious, as most new nurses are. Nursing is a stress- filled occupation, and let’s face it, nursing school doesn’t really prepare you for the reality of the industry.

So, to cope with those stressors, I watched Jana set goals for herself to lose weight, improve strength, prioritize the nutritional needs of her body, and, as a positive outcome, decompress her stress.

When nurses prioritize their own health, it gives validity to our profession. That being said, each patient is not just a physical body. There are mental and emotional facets to every patient, and that is where the elevation of hope becomes so essential.

Nursing is very task-driven; tasks against time. Jana is a nurse who commits her time to her patients. I have seen her prioritize patients who are more time-consuming when others choose to move on to other tasks.

She understands that even when her work phone is ringing, other call lights are going off, and she has doctors wanting to round with her, that the most important patient that she has is the one right in front of her. That gives her patients a sense of importance, elevates hope, and allows for improved healing and better patient outcomes.

Finally, she is the poster child for “advancing healing for all.” Jana does not walk past a call light or avoid a call bell, even when it’s not her patient. She recognizes that ignoring a patient’s need is advocating for inferior care and practice. She offers her help to other staff members; she is proactive rather than reactive.

I know that when I see her name on the schedule beside mine, I have a true advocate on the floor. Jana Elliott is worthy of any praise that we can give her. She is an awesome nurse and teammate. I’m proud to call her a friend and recognize the characteristics that make her a fantastic nurse.
