This effort made me feel included, respected, and understood.
I am honored to nominate George Paine for the DAISY Award. My hospitalization has been one of the most difficult experiences of my life. As a woman in my eighties who suffered multiple lower-body fractures, I was in severe pain and completely dependent on others for even the most basic tasks. Having never been cared for by a male nurse, I was initially nervous, but George immediately put me at ease. Throughout the week and in the days that followed, his compassion, integrity, and clinical excellence made a profound difference for me and my family.
From the moment he entered my room, George treated me with extraordinary kindness and respect. He approached every interaction with gentleness, preserving my dignity even in moments when I felt most exposed. He helped me move, bathe, and use the bathroom with such thoughtfulness that I never felt like a burden. On nights when discouragement overwhelmed me, he listened patiently and reminded me of the progress I was making. His presence brought comfort, reassurance, and a sense of safety that I desperately needed.
George’s courage and integrity were evident in the way he advocated for my well-being. He communicated clearly with my family, answered their questions with patience, and always made sure I was settled before leaving the room.
His clinical expertise was equally remarkable. George took the time to educate my family and me about my low sodium levels, explaining why they mattered and how they affected my recovery. He also taught us about atrial fibrillation and the risks of blood clots. Because English is my second language, he adapted his communication style—speaking slowly, clarifying when needed, and even speaking Spanish when he could. This effort made me feel included, respected, and understood.
What made George’s care truly extraordinary was his respect for my Catholic faith. He recognized how important spiritual support was to me and arranged for a deacon to visit so my daughter and I could receive communion on Sunday. This act brought us comfort, peace, and strength during a frightening time.
George cared for me not just as a patient but as a whole person — physically, emotionally, and spiritually. I cannot think of anyone more deserving of the DAISY Award.
