At the end of his shift, Marcello took it upon himself, on a holiday, to go to the hotel where her belongings were and bring them back to the hospital for her to be discharged.
Marcello was floated to our unit, and on behalf of the PCU nursing staff and the patient that he took excellent care of, we would like to nominate Marcello for a DAISY Award for going above and beyond for this patient during an extremely difficult time in her life. For context, this patient was admitted to our facility after a terrible traumatic event that left her in physical and emotional distress. Throughout her stay, she started to slowly open up to the staff about the events that occurred, and was particularly distressed that her belongings were still missing after this event. She had stated that these belongings were very important to her as they were her only current belongings after having to rebuild her life multiple times, and on top of that, she was in a foreign city with no social support or family/friends to help. After several unsuccessful attempts to call the hotel she had been staying at, she started to feel very depressed and hopeless on top of the pain she was already feeling from her injuries. At the end of his shift, Marcello took it upon himself, on a holiday, to go to the hotel where her belongings were and bring them back to the hospital for her to be discharged. He had told the team that he wanted to do more for her and get past the roadblocks that they were hitting, and took it upon himself to fix the problem and make her hospitalization a little less distressful. You can tell that Marcello truly cares about the emotional well-being of his patients and did everything he could to make a difference in this patient’s life.
