This was not a hospital-provided gesture. This was a nurse spending her own money, on her own time, simply to make an elderly patient feel seen, cared for, and human.
I would like to recognize Denise for a moment of compassion that meant more to our family than she may ever realize.
After eight days in the hospital, my 81-year-old father was growing restless and bored, as anyone would. He casually mentioned that coloring pages and colored pencils might help pass the time. About 30 minutes later, Denise quietly returned to his room carrying a snowflake-themed gift bag, smiled, and wished him a Merry Christmas.
Inside the bag was an adult coloring book and a pack of colored pencils. Tucked inside the book was a receipt from the hospital gift shop, showing the small charge deducted from Denise’s own payroll. She may not have realized it was there, but it revealed something profound. This was not a hospital-provided gesture. This was a nurse spending her own money, on her own time, simply to make an elderly patient feel seen, cared for, and human.
I would have gladly gone to the gift shop myself had I thought of it. Instead, Denise’s compassion moved her to act without being asked, without recognition, and without expectation of thanks.
My father’s face lit up. He immediately started coloring, happy in a way we had not seen in days. Denise’s kindness went far beyond medical care. She gave comfort, dignity, and joy during a difficult and vulnerable time. That matters more than words can say.
