This act went far beyond routine clinical care. Kajace recognized that her patient was experiencing shame and vulnerability, and she responded with empathy rather than judgment.
Kajace is the recipient of the DAISY Award because she demonstrated extraordinary compassion, dignity-centered care, and unwavering dedication to a patient during a deeply vulnerable moment. Her actions reflected the true essence of nursing — seeing the person first and responding with humanity, respect, and kindness.
When Kajace discovered that her patient had lice and severely matted hair, the patient expressed embarrassment and asked if her hair could be cut. Without hesitation, Kajace partnered with Michelle Danzy, PCA, to gently wash the patient’s hair twice to fully remove the infestation. She then carefully gave the patient a shoulder-length haircut, transforming what could have been a humiliating experience into one of dignity and comfort. Kajace remained with the patient afterward to ensure she felt clean, comfortable, and emotionally supported.
This act went far beyond routine clinical care. Kajace recognized that her patient was experiencing shame and vulnerability, and she responded with empathy rather than judgment. By taking the time to restore her patient’s cleanliness and appearance, she protected her dignity and reinforced her worth as a person. The patient was not treated as a task to complete, but as someone deserving of patience, gentleness, and respect.
Kajace’s actions serve as a powerful reminder that nursing is not only about medical treatment, but about preserving humanity in moments when patients feel exposed or afraid. Her compassion turned a difficult situation into an experience of healing and trust. She exemplifies the highest ideals of the profession and the spirit of the DAISY Award.
