Dawn embodies the highest ideals of nursing. She heals emotionally as much as physically, turning fear into strength and isolation into connection.
Dawn Horvatich is the recipient of the DAISY Award because she transforms fear into hope and medical treatment into a human connection. Her compassion, warmth, and extraordinary emotional presence create an environment where patients feel safe, empowered, and deeply cared for during one of the hardest journeys of their lives.

When a patient began chemotherapy for breast cancer, she entered the Infusion Center overwhelmed with fear and uncertainty. Dawn immediately met her with a hug, reassurance, and genuine friendship. The patient shared that she walked in crying and left smiling because Dawn’s loving presence made her feel safe. On the day the patient lost her hair, she arrived distraught and vulnerable. Dawn gently encouraged her to remove her beanie, smiled, and told her she was absolutely beautiful. In that moment, the patient felt seen, confident, and empowered to embrace herself. That affirmation changed how she viewed her treatment and her identity, giving her the courage to move forward without hiding.

Dawn possesses a rare ability to explain complex treatments in a way that removes fear while preserving honesty. Her deep knowledge of chemotherapy and side effects, paired with her uplifting personality, creates transparency without anxiety. She supports not only patients but her fellow infusion nurses, stepping into any role needed to keep the unit running smoothly. Dawn does more than provide service — she creates an experience of care that is joyful, human, and full of life, even in the presence of cancer.

Her impact extends far beyond clinical care. Dawn remembers names, offers hugs during the hardest moments, and inspires patients to return and face difficult treatments with courage. Many patients complete their therapy yet return simply to visit her, a testament to the bond she builds. One patient shared that Dawn’s care inspired her to volunteer at the chemo center after treatment, wanting to pass forward the hope and kindness she received. Dawn didn’t just help her survive chemotherapy — she helped transform her outlook on life.

Dawn embodies the highest ideals of nursing. She heals emotionally as much as physically, turning fear into strength and isolation into connection. Her ability to inspire others is a gift that reaches far beyond the infusion chair. Patients describe her as an angel, and her presence changes lives. Dawn Horvatich is a nurse whose compassion leaves a permanent mark, and her care represents the true spirit of the DAISY Award.
