She did not just provide clinical care; she showed genuine compassion, professionalism, and unwavering dedication.
I would like to recognize Sophia, a night shift ICU nurse, for the exceptional care she provided to my grandmother during a very frightening time for our family. Sophia took over my grandmother’s care at the start of her shift after my grandmother was transferred to the ICU following a rapid response.

From the first night, Sophia was attentive, compassionate, and reassuring. She made sure my grandmother was comfortable and took the time to explain what was happening, which helped ease so much of our fear. Because of her calm presence and obvious dedication, I felt comfortable going home that first night, knowing my grandmother was truly in the best hands.

The second night was especially difficult. My grandmother required constant attending, including a PICC line placement, a Foley catheter, and continuous monitoring. At one point, she became very unstable, maxed out on pressors, on BiPAP, and in need of nonstop ICU care. Through this, Sophia never wavered. She remained calm, confident, and gentle. She made sure my grandmother was as comfortable as possible while managing a highly complex and critical situation. Watching the way she cared for my grandmother made it clear how skilled and dedicated she is as a nurse.

Although I am a nurse in the same building, Sophia never assumed prior knowledge. She explained everything thoroughly, answered all of my questions with patience, and treated me with kindness and respect, not as a co-worker but as a concerned family member. Over the three days Sophia cared for my grandmother, she consistently went above and beyond what is expected as a nurse. She did not just provide clinical care; she showed genuine compassion, professionalism, and unwavering dedication.

The DAISY Award is meant to recognize nurses who make an extraordinary difference, and Sophia is exactly that kind of nurse. Our family will always be grateful for the care and comfort she provided during one of the hardest times in our lives.
