She's very rare, and we are grateful to have had the experience to get to know her a little.
My uncle was born with severe cerebral palsy and partial brain damage. He wasn't supposed to live past 14, but he has beaten the odds, and he's 51 and going. He's outlived everyone he went to school with, so he's special to the family, our little miracle. With his brain damage he can speak, but it's very hard for people to understand him unless you have been around him 24/7, my family still has a problem understanding him when he goes in public or in the hospital. He's pretty quiet when he answers questions. He usually shakes his head up and down for yes or side to side for no, he also uses his eyes up and down for yes or side to side for no, very rarely will he talk. He went from emergency services to the ICU. Now we're currently on the 10th floor. He's got three major things wrong with him, and he's still not acting completely himself all the way yet.

There is one overnight nurse named Hiyam. Watching how she interacts with my uncle is amazing. You can tell this isn't just a job to her. She would make sure he was comfortable, do her job, and act more like a friend or family member. I've been in and out with him a lot in the last two years; this is the only time I've seen him this verbal. He enjoys most nurses at the hospital, but my uncle treats her like family or a friend as well. She won his respect by taking time to understand him, and by her passion for being a nurse, day and night. He is still quiet unless it's Hiyam; if it's her, he'll talk to her, and they will joke around. I do believe she gives him great comfort. I don't see very many nurses like her. She's very rare, and we are grateful to have had the experience to get to know her a little. In my uncle's and my eyes, we feel that you guys should know you're lucky to have her, and we believe she should get a raise as well. Whenever we get released here, hopefully, we won't have to come back for a while, but if we do, we will be praying to have her; she's a miracle. We hope she gets the recognition she deserves. PS, my uncle can't sign his name; he can only do an X. I read this to him, and he agreed. This is his signature, X.
