We had a patient who was pregnant and had cancer. Her baby passed away, and she had to deliver the baby and then go to another floor for her cancer treatment. She became depressed and refused to let her family come and see her once she transferred. Multiple antepartum nurses visited her on the other unit, including the perinatal bereavement counselor and manager; however, Nicole stands out as she came in on a holiday to comfort her.

When I went to see the patient, the Monday after that holiday weekend, the patient told me that Nicole came and sat with her and kept her company while she was grieving the loss of her baby and essentially her own life. The patient decided to go to hospice and go home after. The patient’s sister called to tell the manager what an amazing team she has and how much Nicole meant to the patient and her family. Nicole is their angel, and they will forever be grateful for her coming in on her time off to their baby sister in her last days.
