Thursday was the day after a long, complex surgery and before another long, complex procedure the next day. Kat was my day shift nurse. In so many ways and on so many levels, she set a precedent. Her greeting was direct yet tender. Her inquiry into my state of being was clear and empathetic. She possessed a mighty skill set, solid experience with several patients, and above all, she felt entirely present and available to my needs, emotionally and otherwise.
This may sound like a lofty claim from little old me, but she feels equipped with the spirit of a leader of sorts. Tribal, diplomatic, or other... doesn't matter. There is something that many successful people have called "high commitment low attachment". That's just one more way to describe her.
I can go on and on about how well-rounded she is, but you can find plenty of well-rounded folks. She tended to me so well. She made fabulous suggestions and inquiries with zero pressure for me to choose clearly. She put my choices and experience in my hands in such a radical way. She advocated for me in a very empowering way. That is healing. That is in service to you, your profession, and your community. That is being in the business of humans.
Kat assured me she'd be there Friday morning before I was wheeled out for the "big" surgery. She was. Ready as ever, pockets full of compassion, a sense of levity that offered space for my partner and me to really (safely) lean into our experience as it was happening. She stood by, ready to respond to any bid I may offer her. I felt safe. My partner felt happy leaving me in her care. Kat met me where I was at over and over again. I believe that this is her benchmark. It's what she is able to offer day in and day out.
On Friday, she bid me farewell and told us she was off to Europe for a trip. I was ecstatic to hear that her whole life did not revolve around being a nurse or the hospital. She really lives outside of these walls, further allowing her to bring life into them. I have the highest of regards for Kat. She's a stellar human that kicks butt at what she does...and really a natural at life.
It is an honor and a pleasure to speak about her radiance and magnificence. Robin Williams said it best... "You treat a disease, you win, you lose. You treat a person, I guarantee you you'll win, no matter what the outcome.
