He created a safe space at a moment when the patient felt the most unsafe, and his presence truly changed the tone of that encounter.
I would like to nominate Ken for a DAISY Award for the compassion, honesty, and genuine human connection he showed to a patient in deep psychological distress. We had a behavioral health patient who was overwhelmed, scared, and struggling to feel grounded. Many people shy away from these moments, but Ken stepped forward with calm, steady kindness. What stood out most was Ken's honesty. Instead of offering empty reassurance or avoiding difficult questions, he spoke to the patient with complete transparency. He told the patient the truth - respectfully, gently, and with compassion. In a situation where the patient had already felt lied to and deceived by others, Ken's straightforward yet caring approach was exactly what they needed. The patient became noticeably calmer and thanked Ken repeatedly for not lying to them, not sugar-coating anything, and not making them feel dismissed. They said it was the first time in a long time that someone had treated them "like a real person" and not just another psych case. Ken took the time to listen, validate their feelings, and build trust in a way that made a real difference in their emotional state and their ability to participate in their care. Ken's ability to combine honesty with compassion is what nursing is all about. He created a safe space at a moment when the patient felt the most unsafe, and his presence truly changed the tone of that encounter. The impact he made was immediate and meaningful - and exactly the kind of care the DAISY Award is meant to honor. For these reasons, I believe Ken wholeheartedly deserves this recognition.
