Sherri showed us empathy and kindness by making a messy schedule simpler and a dreadful situation a bit more bearable.
Sherri took care of my sister, who was recently diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer.
That day, we started with an oncology appointment where they were going to draw labs. But because we had an appointment at the hospital, we left the office quickly to get to our short-stay arrival on time. We were told we would be responsible for getting the outpatient labs between appointments at the hospital.
We had a Mediport placement scheduled that day, a bone scan, as well as the lab draw. Well, as things often go, the time frame of completing the Mediport insertion and recovering from the sedation ran right into our bone scan time. We did not get to the outpatient lab to get the blood drawn in between the procedures, as was predicted.
Sherri demonstrated the WellSpan values of Working as One as well as Finding a Better Way as she coordinated with nuclear med to get my sister staff and a litter transport for the bone scan since her sedation was not worn off enough for me to take her alone.
Sherri also called the lab and facilitated a lab draw in the PACU to fulfill the oncologist's orders. This was not simple since the registration number was different for her outpatient port placement procedure and the outpatient lab orders, but Sherri took the time to advocate for my sister and get it all done while she was in the PACU.
Sherri showed professional compassion as she tended to my sister's emotional and physical needs. Our family is dealing with this devastating diagnosis.

God bless you, Sherri!
