I work in the Specialty Clinics, where the true essence of nursing is reflected in seeing the patient as a human being first, before viewing them as a medical case. One experience that had a profound impact on my professional journey involved a female patient who presented to the clinic complaining of leg pain, believing it to be related to a bone condition. At the same time, she was facing challenging personal circumstances that were clearly affecting her emotional well-being.

I was informed that the patient required humanitarian support, so I immediately approached her, sat with her calmly, and listened attentively to her concerns while assessing her condition in a holistic manner. Through careful dialogue and appropriate clinical questioning, I noticed that her symptoms did not align with typical bone-related pain. Before she left the clinic, I asked if she needed any further assistance, at which point she shared that she was experiencing a painful skin rash.

Based on my assessment, I suspected herpes zoster (shingles). I personally escorted the patient to the appropriate specialty clinic and ensured that her case and full medical history were clearly communicated. Due to the sensitivity of her condition, particularly as she is a kidney transplant patient, an urgent decision was made to transfer her to the Emergency Department to initiate immediate treatment.

The patient was admitted, placed in isolation for her safety, and hospitalized for ten days under close monitoring. Thanks to prompt intervention, sound clinical judgment, and effective coordination among the multidisciplinary healthcare team, her condition improved significantly, and the leg pain she had been experiencing resolved completely.

This experience reflects the true meaning of nursing—not only providing clinical care, but responding swiftly, listening with compassion, applying critical thinking, and delivering holistic, patient-centered care that can genuinely change a patient’s life.

This is the true spirit of the DAISY Award.
