Throughout the nearly two-hour ordeal, Chiara maintained a calm, positive attitude that my sleep-deprived and stressed wife needed.
My wife and I felt that Chiara Baker is a perfect example of what a DAISY Award nurse should embody, and we would like to nominate her in hopes of giving her recognition as a nurse who is in nursing for the right reasons and is meant for the field.
I would like to preface my story by saying that my wife and I are both nurses. We are on our third child, and each birth prior to this was extremely uneventful. This postpartum experience, although it may not have been the most severe situation for nurses of the postpartum unit, it still felt quite scary for our growing family.
At my request, my wife had sent me off to grab some food for her, as she had felt shaky a couple of hours after delivery. Chiara had checked her and noted some above-average bleeding and planned to come back to check her a little more frequently. During our long-awaited lunch, my wife mentioned feeling a little gush of blood come out. Within a couple of minutes, Chiara had arrived to do her next check. During her check, there was approximately ~300-400 mL of new blood that had come out in that “gush”. Chiara, without hesitation, pressed the staff assist, called for backup, and began assessing and calming my wife, who, unfortunately, is well aware of the severity of postpartum bleeding complications. We recently had a friend who went into postpartum DIC and spent several days receiving blood in the ICU. This was unfortunately at the forefront of my wife’s mind. Throughout the nearly two-hour ordeal, Chiara maintained a calm, positive attitude that my sleep-deprived and stressed wife needed. When my wife finally broke down, she was there to reassure her that she would be okay and to ease her mind that she was on the right track. She spent the remainder of the day frequently checking my wife, advocating for some provider rechecks when she felt the bleeding had still continued for too long, and got her medications needed to make the day go a little more smoothly. After it all, Chiara and my wife were able to discuss commonalities in faith and mentioned that she had prayed for my wife, which brought my wife’s emotions up and sent another wave of gratitude.
It’s wonderful and refreshing to see when a young nurse has found the niche field of nursing they were very clearly meant to be in.
I also want to thank every PCA, nurse, and physician who aided her in these moments. Your efforts do not go unnoticed. Each and every staff member we crossed paths with this stay was fantastic, kind, respectful of every request, and kept my wife’s comfort and the baby’s comfort paramount.
