Derrick has been phenomenal since the first day I started having to come to the treatment room for transfusions. I am a nurse at another hospital and speak from experience that he is one of a kind. He goes above and beyond for every patient and coworker that I witness him encounter. He remembers to ask me how my father is doing or how my master's program is going. I told him one time that my father was in the hospital over a month ago, and he still remembers. A much older gentleman patient today was requiring a lot of help from staff in neighboring clinics to address his needs and had come from a distance. He was due for treatment, but wasn't on the treatment room schedule today. Derrick made the concession to work the patient in this afternoon to help avoid another trip this way and take care of this patient. Additionally, the man would need labs. Derrick offered to collect them for him when he sees him later, so the man didn't have to wait at the lab. I have been a recipient of his kindness and exemplary care on many occasions, from the offering of a blanket, headphones, and a general interest in making sure I was okay. This is not just for me; I see this same caring when he interacts with every patient and coworker as well. Derrick is the kind of nurse that others should emulate. I strive to be that nurse as well, and I want him to be recognized because his caring and effort do not go unnoticed.
