Maddie didn’t just show up. She stood out. Her knowledge, her instincts, her advocacy, and her heart, they saved my mom’s life.
There was one day in particular that will stay with our family forever, when everything seemed to be unraveling. At this point, my mother had already spent several days in the Medical ICU with necrotizing pancreatitis, respiratory failure, and acute kidney injury. She was in significant pain, unable to find relief, and growing more anxious by the hour. We could see her suffering, and as a family, we felt helpless. Her bowel regimen wasn’t working, her abdomen was distended, and we could tell something just wasn’t right, but we didn’t know what to do.

Then Maddie stepped in.

She had been caring for my mother with compassion and consistency, but on this particular day, her clinical insight and courageous advocacy changed the trajectory of my mother’s care. Maddie noticed that her pain was escalating, and the current management wasn’t effective. Rather than waiting for the next routine round or brushing it off, Maddie spoke up. She escalated her concerns clearly and confidently to the medical team, advocating for a deeper evaluation. She explained to us what she was seeing, reassured us that she wasn’t going to let it be ignored, and stayed at my mother’s side while orders were adjusted.

That same day, she was found to have ischemic bowel. Within hours, she was taken for emergency surgery. It was a life-saving intervention. Had Maddie not trusted her clinical instincts, had she not been brave enough to raise her voice and demand a closer look, my mom may not have survived.

But Maddie’s impact didn’t stop there.

She sat with her, speaking gently and calmly, helping ease her medical anxiety. She repositioned her carefully to manage both her oxygenation and abdominal pain, thinking through every detail, from the IV lines to the pressure points, to make her as comfortable as possible. She didn’t just follow the plan or a checklist; she thought critically, acted decisively, and treated my mother like her own family.

And she treated us like family, too.

She explained what was happening in ways we could understand, sometimes more than once, and never made us feel like a burden. She checked on our emotional well-being and made sure we weren’t being left behind in the whirlwind of ICU medicine.

That day could have ended so differently. But thanks to Maddie, it didn’t.

Maddie didn’t just show up. She stood out. Her knowledge, her instincts, her advocacy, and her heart, they saved my mom’s life. We looked forward to seeing Maddie every day. She was our calm in the chaos, our guide when we were lost, and our hope when we were afraid. She became part of our family, and we will carry her kindness and courage with us always.

For all of this and so much more, Maddie deserves the deepest recognition. She exemplifies what it means to be a DAISY nurse.
