She is more than a professor; she is a mentor, a protector, and a constant source of strength throughout our nursing journey.
Dr. Chasity Burns was nominated for the DAISY Award by her students at Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science/ Mervyn M. Dymally College of Nursing because she has changed our lives. She is more than a professor; she is a mentor, a protector, and a constant source of strength throughout our nursing journey.

When we felt overwhelmed, discouraged, or ready to give up, Dr. Burns was there. She stayed up late answering our questions, checking on our progress, and reminding us that we belonged in this profession. She believed in us even on the days we struggled to believe in ourselves. Her dedication went far beyond the classroom; she showed up for us emotionally, academically, and professionally.

Dr. Burns brings more than 20 years and counting of real-world nursing experience into her teaching, drawing from emergency medicine, urgent care, case management, geriatric nursing, and nursing education. She taught us what it truly means to be a nurse, not just the skills, but the compassion, integrity, and resilience required to care for others. Whether in the hospital, clinic, or on campus, she modeled excellence and humanity in everything she did.

Dr. Burns never gave up on us. She pushed us to be better, supported us through challenges, and prepared us not only to pass, but to lead. Her impact will stay with us long after graduation. For the countless ways she has poured into us and shaped the nurses we are becoming.
