She wasn't just delivering care; she was delivering confidence, calm, and comfort in the face of fear.
Our mother was admitted after a rapid health decline and diagnosed with stage four rectal cancer. She was unable to eat or pass stool and was facing the harsh reality of a bowel obstruction that had taken complete control of her body. She underwent an urgent surgery with ostomy placement, an emotionally and physically disorienting procedure that marked the beginning of a new way of life for her. At night, during the vulnerable hours after her surgery, the colostomy bag leaked. It could have been a moment of quiet panic, defined by embarrassment, loss of control, and pain, but that's not the story we remember. Nina was there, and she didn't just respond clinically; she responded intentionally. She could have simply changed the bag and moved on to her next patient; no one would have faulted her. Instead, she used that moment as a turning point. She sat with my mom and didn't just fix the leak; she taught her. She explained why it happened, walked her through how to care for the site, and showed her how to feel in control again. She did all of this while managing her pain and preserving her dignity in a situation that could have felt humiliating; that's what made Nina extraordinary. She wasn't just delivering care; she was delivering confidence, calm, and comfort in the face of fear. My mom had just entered a completely new reality, and Nina was the first person to help her step into it, not with dread, but with clarity. As a night nurse, she could have gone unnoticed, but Nina stood out because she chose to stay present, to go slower, to treat my mom like someone whose understanding and peace mattered just as much as her healing. She was the kind of nurse you never forget! She shows up for her patients in the most fragile moments. We are endlessly grateful for her compassion, her patience, and the way she helped my mom feel human again. Sarah Holm.
