I was on 6S as a student nurse through Grand Valley State University. I was placed with Sylvia for two days, and I learned so much! Her kindness, willingness to teach, and patience made for a welcoming learning experience. She allowed me to be extremely hands-on in a safe and supportive way. I was able to pull medications from the Pyxis, scan medications, give medications through a PJG tube (something I’ve never done), and perform a thorough head-to-toe assessment.

Through my clinical experience, it is very rare to get a nurse who’s so caring and patient, and it deserves great recognition. Overall, for these two days, I felt my nursing skills improved leaps and bounds, and I’m thankful I was able to work with Sylvia! The skills and knowledge she taught me will not be forgotten as I continue on my nursing journey.

Additionally, aside from being a great teacher, Sylvia is also a great nurse. While with her, she noticed a change in a patient who was experiencing difficulty speaking. She was quick to react and quickly notified the provider and the charge nurse. She assessed quickly and ensured the patient was safe. Sylvia was also very diligent with every single one of her patients. She took the extra time with them to display therapeutic communication and listen to their concerns.
