With nurse Janika’s professional and empathetic care, however, he was able to receive his necessary treatment without experiencing confusion, fear, or serious pain. I cannot say enough nice things about this nurse!
My husband has a myriad of service-connected medical problems. One of them is an inability to absorb iron, so he needs iron infusions. But to him, just finding a vein in his arm to insert the IV feels like searching for a four-leaf clover with a machete. The procedure, along with the pain, made the experience so stressful that it activated his PTSD. And that made him reluctant to get the infusions his body needs.
With nurse Janika’s professional and empathetic care, however, he was able to receive his necessary treatment without experiencing confusion, fear, or serious pain. I cannot say enough nice things about this nurse!
She was professional, explained what she was doing and why, then made sure he understood and felt comfortable with it. She was compassionate and actually listened to his concerns, then did whatever was possible to alleviate his worries. She also recognized that I was only trying to help and comfort him, not interfere. So she allowed me to sit by him during the infusion. When I rubbed his earlobe to distract him from the initial pain of the insertion, she understood what I was doing and appreciated it.
More importantly, she realized that this veteran, who was her patient, wasn’t trying to be difficult. She understood that he, like all veterans, just wanted to trust her and her process. They just need information and answers to their questions. They just want a little interest and support, that’s all. And nurse Janika delivered all of the above. We want her to know how much we appreciate her care and dedication.
