Their actions not only ensured the infant received appropriate care but also restored the family’s confidence in the care team.
During a recent hospitalization of a 7-week-old infant with Arthrogryposis, Nurse Twitch demonstrated exceptional clinical judgment and advocacy that led to the discovery of a femur fracture. Their persistence in escalating concerns, despite initial dismissal by the care team, directly contributed to a timely diagnosis and intervention. The infant, born with Arthrogryposis—a condition involving joint contractures and extreme musculoskeletal fragility—was recovering from surgery and had been cleared from spinal and osteopenia precautions. While the parents were away, the baby became increasingly fussy. Nurse Twitch sensed something was wrong and repeatedly advocated for further evaluation. Despite initial resistance, they persisted until imaging was ordered, which revealed a femur fracture. This injury extended the infant’s NICU stay and raised concerns about safe handling practices for patients with this condition. Nurse Twitch exemplified the highest standards of patient advocacy and clinical vigilance. Their actions not only ensured the infant received appropriate care but also restored the family’s confidence in the care team. The parents explicitly credited them with “saving their baby” and expressed deep gratitude for their determination and compassion.
