Sandy and the rest of the team provided professional, compassionate, and attentive care to me during my time as an outpatient at the Lab.
I already submitted the review of my treatment in the Duke Regional Catheterization Lab and how Sandy and the rest of the team provided professional, compassionate, and attentive care to me during my time as an outpatient at the Lab. Sandy was the one who called to inform me of the time to come to the Lab and what was needed for me to do in preparation for coming. She exhibited those same attributes when my husband and I first met her at the Lab as she began prepping me for the procedure. Her voice was very reassuring as I responded to instructions. She was patient and kind, which allowed me to calm down as I began to prepare for a procedure that I had no idea how it would go, even though I was told. I’m sure many patients come into this setting without being aware of the specifics of the procedure, and many may bring a family member or friend for assistance. But I think the best approach is to allow individuals to relax and let them know that nurses and other hospital employees are there for them, and to realize that they will be cared for and, most of all, be treated with respect, regardless of who they are. Being a patient, in my opinion, can take away your identity and who you are, which does not lend itself to respect for healing. I always feel humbled when I enter a hospital setting because I feel that my control over myself might be taken away from me. However when someone on the treatment team makes you feel that you will receive the best of care because of who you are, no matter your race, your ethnicity, your age, your cultural characteristics and then demonstrates those attributes, it allows you to give God the glory and thank Him for the individual who understands you and knows what caring for a person is all about. Some nurses, like Sandy, showed me that they go beyond what is expected to provide the most appropriate personal care. God is the healer of the body, but nurses, like Sandy, take the extra step to let you know that you are worth all the care that is given to make that happen. Thank you goes out to Sandy and her teammates for the best physical and mental care that I never expected them to give, but it happened. So to God be the glory!
