Jean demonstrated all of Ochsner's core values in caring for this patient.
We had a patient come down from the 5th floor to be prepped for an MRI procedure that was supposed to take place yesterday. From report that we received from the nurse on the floor, this patient was going to be difficult. The patient was said to be combative and uncooperative with lab draws and other care from the nurse who was caring for her on the floor.

Jean was assigned this patient. When she heard this, she dove into the patient's chart and found that the patient had AMA'd from a previous visit, was an IV drug abuser, and had not been detoxed. This could explain her behavior. Jean went into protective momma mode and advocated for the patient in many ways to improve her care and help her get what she needed to make her stay successful and helpful to her.

On arrival, Jean greeted the already agitated patient with kindness and compassion. She explained the plan of care in a way that the patient understood and agreed to. During the pre-op, Jean noticed the patient's IV line was infiltrated and needed to be replaced. Of course, this added to the patient's agitation. Jean advocated for anesthesia to place a line with ultrasound guidance at the bedside, and the patient settled down, agreeing with that plan. Jean held the patient's hand throughout the entire process and talked the patient through it. The patient held Jean's hand and said several times, "Don't leave me," while looking at Jean. To which Jean would reply, "I'm right here, I'm not going anywhere."

When the patient rolled to the MRI, she stated, "Thank you," and "Love you," to Jean. Jean demonstrated all of Ochsner's core values in caring for this patient. Jean put the needs of the patient first, maintained the patient's integrity, included the patient in the plan of care, and showed compassion and kindness to a patient who may have been misunderstood. Jean also offered to recover the patient in post op if needed. Jean is a great preceptor, coworker, friend, and nurse.
