Our son cannot move or speak, but Corine quickly created a rapport with him, picking up on his subtle communication cues and making him comfortable.
Corinne was the first daytime nurse we encountered during my son's stay at the MICU at Rhode Island Hospital. My son is 21 years old, and due to an overload of patients at Hasbro Children's Hospital (the children's wing of RI Hospital), we were directed to the adult hospital for the first time. We did not know what to expect, and as parents of a child with special needs, we were concerned that our son (and we) would not be treated as compassionately as the children's side. Corinne greeted us warmly the first morning after our arrival, and we were immediately reassured that the adult side was nothing to be afraid of. She went above and beyond to make our family comfortable. Our son cannot move or speak, but Corinne quickly created a rapport with him, picking up on his subtle communication cues and making him comfortable. This hospital admission was not typical for us in terms of the sickness, and so we had tons of questions during the stay. She spent considerable time answering our questions, and it was clear she knew what she was talking about. She also spent considerable time explaining the blood test results and what each parameter meant, and how it relates to the ongoing medications and treatments. In fact, some of the resident doctors discussed some topics with us and then referred to Corinne as an expert on certain matters. She also noticed that my son’s leg had no pulse and determined that the A-line was likely causing a blockage. At her recommendation, the doctor removed the line, and blood flow began again. Finally, she wanted to ensure his leg was heading in the right direction, so she recommended a scan. It was ordered, and the scanning department complained about coming up to the room, but she made the case that they needed to come up quickly, and sure enough, they did. We have been in the hospital many times over the last ten years, and Corinne is one of the best nurses we have ever encountered. I hope you will consider her for this Award. Thank you.
