Darren cultivates an environment where we can excel individually and as a cohesive team, quietly sharing in the successes of those he guides.
Our department's hectic days are a shared reality, mainly due to the patients we care for, the most vulnerable among us. However, our team consistently shines through with remarkable teamwork and unity amidst this intensity. We were honored with the Team of the Year award, a victory that reflects our collective effort and highlights the inspiring leadership that has guided us along the way. With our numerous celebrations, it’s essential to shine a light on the incredible manager beacon.
There was a day that stood out in our memories when we faced an exceptionally busy shift filled with admissions that heightened our acuity. Knowing that the next shift would be short-staffed, I decided to stay longer. To our surprise, Darren arrived early that morning, ready to support us. As the morning shift began, it was clear that staffing challenges would require our charge nurse to take on patients.
In an unexpected yet deeply appreciated gesture, Darren stepped in to take a bedside assignment himself, allowing our charge nurse to focus on her vital role. His proactive approach made it possible for me to leave before noon. I later discovered that Darren had ensured that the morning shift had a free nurse as a resource, demonstrating his dedication to our well-being. He even went the extra mile by providing lunch for both shifts, a thoughtful gesture he often extends without seeking recognition.
It’s not rare for Darren to be present during shift changes. He values connection with the day and night staff and makes it a point to attend our unit rounds. While he may not always be the most vocal leader, he possesses a quiet strength that empowers us to take center stage. By listening and offering guidance, he encourages us to pursue various projects for the unit, allowing us to expand our skills and knowledge through active participation in research and conferences.
Darren stands as a steadfast advocate for the improvements our unit is undergoing, and we’ve been fortunate to receive new beds and equipment to support our work. A standout moment was when we proposed applying for the Beacon Award. Dareen responded with genuine enthusiasm, wholeheartedly believing in us. He played an instrumental role in documenting our unit’s achievements, leading to our successful recognition as a Beacon unit. Yet, when it came time for accolades, he quickly pushed us forward, ensuring that we received the recognition we deserved, often stepping back into the shadows to let us shine. He keeps to the sides and back in photos, not just because of his stature. Even now, he supports our journey toward our second Beacon term. Not counting the numerous designations, we now have for our unit.
Together, we have been part of Saddleback for over 40 years, and during this time, we’ve experienced many different leadership styles. Each leader has contributed to our growth. This time allows us to grasp the unique and compassionate leadership we have today. Darren cultivates an environment where we can excel individually and as a cohesive team, quietly sharing in the successes of those he guides. His vision and unwavering support have indeed fostered our collaborative spirit and resilience.
Ultimately, Darren embodies the essence of a leader who helps others shine—he is, without a doubt, the wind beneath our wings.
