Kayla improved the baby's care, and she improves patient care significantly behind the scenes every time she works.
It is extremely difficult to narrow down one specific story about how Kayla has made a positive impact in patient care. For Kayla, providing exceptional care is not an exception but what she does every day. I managed to narrow down three examples that stand out in my mind.
Kayla is always eager to help when she can. Whether it is an IV start, an NG placement, or a chronic patient with a diaper blowout, Kayla will be willing to help. She didn't hesitate to help me change a chronic bedbound patient's diaper at 7:00 am. She even sang along to the Frozen soundtrack while we did.
Kayla keeps morale high. Whenever I walk into work and see that she will be in charge, I feel reassured that the staff on 3W are in good hands. And I know many of the other nurses on the unit who have expressed the same thing. "She's the best charge nurse I've ever had," was one comment from a nurse who had worked at a different hospital.
"Whenever I see Kayla's name under charge, I know we're gonna be okay," was another nurse's comment.
For one last example, as a charge, Kayla takes it upon herself to read through the charts of patients who are coming up to our floor so she can have more critical patients on her radar. Once, I had a baby coming to my floor, and the report I received did not highlight the severity of this baby's respiratory distress. Based on the report, I thought they weren't in respiratory distress. However, before the patient came to our floor, Kayla warned me that I would need to prioritize that patient because she had taken the time to check the patient's chart for herself. Sure enough, as soon as the patient was on our floor, we called the doctor, the baby was put on high flow nasal cannula, and immediately became my most critical patient. I knew ahead of time that I needed to work around my other patients to prioritize this baby's care because of Kayla. Kayla also helped me by giving meds for my other patients so that I could focus on my sickest one without having to worry about the others.
