As an ER nurse, delivering a baby is something I don’t have personal experience with, nor am I super knowledgeable about, and it is intimidating. Tonight, Patsy showed her amazing L&D skills and leadership skills. She went and got a patient out of the car. Once she saw that the patient was clearly pregnant and having contractions, she rushed her to our OB room, where she was quick to get fetal heart tones and get mom ready to be evaluated. Patsy noticed mom’s water broke and had meconium in it, so she ensured the doctor and the team were ready to deliver the baby. Patsy assisted the ER doctor in the fast delivery of a beautiful baby girl.

Patsy then continued to provide amazing care for the mother to ensure she was safe post-delivery. She monitored for hemorrhage, helped to properly deliver the placenta, constantly gave fundal massages, and kept the patient safe. She guided the staff in caring for the baby and mom. After that, she assisted the mom to breastfeed her baby and encouraged skin-to-skin and healthy bonding. Mom was truly grateful for her. I confidently believe that mom and baby were safe and cared for because of Patsy. She also taught her fellow ER nurses so much!
