I wanted to recognize one of our new charge nurses, MaryJane Amaechi. She continues to impress me greatly with each shift that she works, especially as a charge nurse. MaryJane is incredibly hardworking, has great attention to detail, impressive problem-solving and de-escalation skills, and is really a phenomenal asset to our unit for our patients and for her colleagues. We have a good amount of new nurses (either new to nursing or new to this setting of care), and she takes them all under her wing, leading them through the shift with ease on her part. She has been especially helpful in assisting our nurses to navigate challenging patients (sick or just behaviorally challenging), challenging families, and the challenging nature of our high turnover observation unit. MaryJane also somehow finds the time to support not only the patient, but their families as well- she helped a dying patients daughter through what I am sure was one of the most challenging times of her life- this daughter came back to the unit after the patient was transferred off, just to thank her for what an impact she had made on her during a really hard time. This does not surprise me, as MJ has a heart of gold. Additionally, amidst the chaos of all of the patients that convert to inpatient, discharges, and then all of the admissions that replace them, MJ keeps a calm, even-keeled nature, getting the work done regardless. I have noticed that this nature of hers greatly positively impacts her colleagues on the shift- they look at her and realize that they do not need to panic, and that everything will get done. If any of her colleagues start to spiral, she cuts this off quickly and says, lets go, we have work to do. I have yet to hear MaryJane complain once since she has joined our team- she puts her head down and gets to work- and helps others to do the same. MaryJane is the type of charge nurse who has all of our problems solved before she can even tell you about them. She really is an incredible natural leader and is a very special nurse and person.
