Although I am not a patient cared for by Sean, I have had the privilege of serving as his advisor for his honors thesis over the past year and a half. In that time, I have witnessed something extraordinary, something that deserves the highest recognition. Through his dedication, curiosity, compassion, and commitment to the discovery of new knowledge, Sean has quietly done for me what nurses often do for patients: he has helped heal a part of me. When I entered healthcare 33 years ago, I carried a deep passion for knowledge, scholarship, and the pursuit of mechanisms that promote healing through science, teaching, and practice. Over the years, with the weight of responsibilities, deadlines, and administrative demands, that original fire can dim. It is easy to forget where we began and why we chose this profession in the first place. Sean's commitment to understanding the why behind patient care, his hunger to explore new knowledge, and his integrity in scholarship all reflect the heart of an extraordinary nurse. His work reminded me of the joy and purpose of inquiry, the very spirit that first brought me into healthcare decades ago. In this way, Sean has been a physician to my own professional inadequacy. Through his example, he renewed my love for nursing as both an art and a science. He brought me back to the source of my calling: to heal, to teach, to discover, and to serve. Sean may be early in his nursing journey, but he carries the qualities of a seasoned professional: compassion, curiosity, courage, and a commitment to excellence. For these reasons, and for the impact he has had not only on his patients but on me personally, I wholeheartedly nominate him for the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nursing Students. He is exactly the kind of nurse our profession needs, and the kind of nurse who reminds the rest of us why we chose this path.
